West Wind Retrievers and Training is a full scale training center and boarding kennel. We specialize in Basic Obedience and Gun Dog training.
We prefer to focus on personal attention in order to make sure each dog receives the time and attention that is vital for successful training.
Our kennels are also located on our property. We take care of your dogs
as if they were our own.
About Us
West Wind Retrievers & Training, was established in 2014. Owned and operated by Professional Trainer,
John "Scooter" Kello.
We are located in South East Virginia, in the small town of Windsor, just west of the City of Suffolk on Route 460.
We also offer an on-site boarding kennel.
Scooter embraces that small-town charm and southern hospitality, that is so well known in their quaint community.
"We cater to each of our client’s specific needs and situations," says Scooter. We take time to discuss your goals and thoroughly evaluate your dog prior to training. Because every dog is different, we also tailor our training techniques specific to your situation.
Scooter strives to make his clients happy with their dog’s performance, whether in basic obedience, hunting, field trials, or hunt tests.

"Scooter" was born and raised in Windsor, VA and has strong ties to the community, supporting organizations such as Ducks Unlimited, Freedom Hunters Association, and Mid Atlantic Hunting Retriever Club. He's been an avid hunter since his childhood and at just 13 years old started training hunting dogs. With over 20 years of dog training experience, "Scooter" has had the privilege of training dogs all over the world. Seven of those years, he worked with the United States Marines Corp, training dogs to detect Improvised Explosive Devises in the US and the Middle East. After training dogs as a hobby and working with the Marine Corps, "Scooter" decided to open West Wind Retrievers and Training in 2014 so that he could share his knowledge with you.
Scooter specializes in Basic Obedience, Gun Dog, and Competition Training.

Pick Up and Drop Off Times
Monday - Friday: 8 AM - 9 AM & 6 PM - 7 PM
Saturday: 10 AM - 11 AM
To accommodate our clients, we do provide Pick Up and Drop Off appointments outside of our normal hours, for a convenience fee of $25.
Clients are welcome and encouraged to visit their dogs while they are in training. Visitation hours correspond with our Pick Up and Drop Off schedule. As we keep a tight training schedule, we do ask for understanding that we may not be able to spend time with you during each visitation, but encourage our clients to take advantage of the Owner-Dog training sessions included in each of our training packages
